My primary desktop, iMac, was a few months over four years old. It began to feel a bit slow with the latest operating system, programs, etc. Therefore, I decided it was time for a new Mac. Despite great notebooks, iPhones, and iPads that we all have today, my desktop computer is still what feels most “right,” to me. It’s my favorite place to discover music, work on photographs, maybe do a little video work, write, email, browse the web, etc. A comfortable chair, large screen, and fast desktop just feels “right.”

How did my search for a new Mac lead to mini Server and what makes it a good choice?

Naturally, coming from an iMac, I considered a new iMac. However, having purchased the newer iMacs for other uses and family members in the past two years, I regularly saw issues with their displays. Yellow tint to certain parts of the display. Furthermore, besides RAM, iMacs are extremely hard to upgrade. The hard drive is very difficult to get to, which makes upgrade and even repair, once out of warranty difficult. Furthermore, it is hard to take an iMac to an Apple Store, even while under warranty, due to their large size. A mini can easily be taken to an Apple store, or better yet, Apple I believe (if I am not mistaken) offers mail-in service for the mini, if you’re in the middle of nowhere. I would still purchase an iMac in the future, but it just felt like a lot of things were adding up against it this time. I might want a SSD at some point too, and it would be “risky,” to do that myself on a still warrantied iMac. iMacs don’t come stock with two hard drives for RAID options either.

Therefore, I knew the Mac mini might be a good choice and the Server model was especially inviting! Why? For one thing, the mini Server Mid-2011 has a faster processor than the lower entry-level iMacs. Yes, it an i7 Quad Core 2.0 GHZ. While all iMacs are now quad-core, the lower end models have i5s, which get Geekbench scores somewhat lower than this mini Server. The mini-Server had the same CPU as the seventeen-hundred dollar 15-inch MacBook pro from early 2011, though the MacBook Pro did get a slight processor bump in late 2011. Nevertheless, you can see, the mini Server, for its size, gets an extremely impressive processor. Geekbench scores put it right at, or even slightly faster than the entry level mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop, now that is saying something! The speed of a machine which costs 2.5x more money!

Second, two hard drives. 1TB of storage in a mini is nothing to laugh about (2 500 GB drives are included). Furthermore, the key here is that the mini Server gets 7200 RPM hard drives, the same speed found in full-sized desktop computers. The two lower end mini models have only 5400 RPM drives, significantly slower and makes them feel more like “notebooks.” Furthermore, by having two hard drives, you have many options. You can use one for time machine, just use both drives for storage, or even put them in RAID 0 or RAID 1 with disk utility when booted into a recovery disk. There are some risks in using RAID, but if you’re a pro user, you will know the risks (higher possibility of losing your data in RAID 0), and you lose Apple’s new Recovery HD which isn’t compatible with RAID. I went ahead and used RAID 0 because this gives me much faster disk reading and writing. More performance, more reason to choose mini Server.

The lack of Apple including any restore disks or USB stick on new Macs is frustrating. I recommend reading some online tutorials on backing up your system, backing up your recovery HD, or even backing up an entire recovery install for easy reinstallation should you ever need it.

Next, memory. The mini Server has 4GB of RAM which is fine for many home users. However, those who do a lot of photography and video work, may want to upgrade it to 8GB. These minis make RAM upgrades simple. A panel rotates on the bottom and allows easy access to the memory, if not access to much else. I upgraded to 8GB, and it is a noticeable improvement. This was less than a fifty dollar upgrade to do myself, and again, offers me more performance and multitasking.

Software: The mini Server has Mac OS X Lion Server included, which is essentially the same consumer version of OS X Lion with the extra “Server,” application included. This application can allow you to use the mini Server as a more professional “server.” You could serve up iCal calendars to people in your home or office, serve local email, etc. However, unless you know you need these features, you’ll likely leave the server functions turned off, or just not open that application. Some of these server hard drives shipped with the servers several years ago and were making me nervous. <br/><br/>The device was easy to use and worked seemlessly with our iSCSI clients. <br/><br/>However, maybe 1 month after switching some of our server storage to use the ix4-200r, I abruptly saw some Windows event logs about corrupted storage and to run check disk. The StorCenter was configured to send emails, etc if anything was fishy. When I logged in to diagnose it, the volume showed up in Windows Disk Management as uninitialized. This was bad, but possibly Window's fault. <br/><br/>I gracefully took both the StorCenter and the Windows server down. Windows could no longer see or connect to the device using iSCSI. The web UI of the device still worked, but it had no volumes. That's right. All volumes were gone. The device reported that everything (hardware wise) looked peachy through the web UI and the little status lights on the device itself. <br/><br/>When I try to do any action in the device it says "Operation cannot be performed because of the status of the device." That includes look at logs, look for volumes, create volumes, etc. All of my data is gone and the web UI reports that everything is good unless I want to do something. <br/><br/>This is sort of a disaster and it's midnight, so I bite the bullet and simultaneously start a restore from backup (from the desktop ix4-200d) and call Iomega for support. It's off-hours, so it costs me $50.00 to talk to somebody. The tech had never seen anything like this before and said it shouldn't have happened. This was shown by the awful software bug where all volumes started failing and finally disapeered for no reason with no logging, warning. They once broken, nothing was possible because "the state of the device". Not even logging. Then, we're in a setup loop (the techs had seen this before, but it's just a matter of software to be able to robustly set a language or timezone without looping) <br/>- The support is ok, they just can't do much for you with their bad software. <br/>- The device is locked down. Some state is in firmware. Other state is on the drives (so no, you can't add your own drives and start with a fresh array.) <br/><br/>I restored ok but we still lost around 1 day or work. I don't use either device from Iomega anymore (not even for backup). I got a QNAS device 6 slots with Atom chip. It came with no storage but I liked the idea that the firmware to run the device is not on the hard drives.) Anyways, that thing runs awesome and it appears to have much more sophisticated, polished firmware. I'm an I.T. provider and I have used the Iomega desktop models on client sites for some time. I did a larger project and sold the ix4-200r 4TB model to my client for use as a backup destination and a location for the archived files. The backups were to be replicated offsite over the internet and the archived files were to be copied to an external USB drive for offsite storage. It seemed to be OK at first, but I encountered a problem copying files over from a Windows server. The shared storage became inaccessible as a result. Looking at the interface showed the same results as Coshe's review... "Operation cannot be performed because of the status of the device.". Nice... the storage was inaccessible. I rebooted the unit and also got the same result as Coshe - could no longer log on. Called support, did all of the same things Coshe did, no dice. One level 3 tech told me to try linuxquestions.org for help mounting the storage from a live linux distro. I was able to get to the data with systemrescuecd and the RAID volume was mountable. This begs the question - why does a free linux rescue cd (running from a usb stick - thanks to lilo) see my data but the Iomega interface cannot? Whatever the case, I recovered the data (much of which had not yet been archived elsewhere) and averted the disaster. Iomega acted as though this was an isolated incident and had me reset the device to factory defaults. I restored all of the data and the shares and life seemed back to normal. I then started getting complaints that some of the data was inaccessible (permission denied). I looked at the permissions from the Windows properties and some directories were getting different permissions than others (the user "root" was the only one with permission). Lovely... thankfully I had archived the files to USB a few days earlier then the directories were accessible. I also noticed that our backup software was having trouble reading from the device. Once again I contacted support and eventually arranged to RMA the unit and send the bad one back for in-depth analysis. I set up the new one, restored the data, and all appeared to be well once again. Not so fast... while moving data around on the shares I encountered corruption - files that would not move or delete. Attempting a deletion caused the unit to crash - same as before. Groundhog day! I've learned my lesson here. Support is treating me like an idiot and I've got a very expensive and very useless device to contend with. I'm going to replace it with something else at my cost (probably the Cisco NSS324) and move on. I'll try my best to get my money back but that's unlikely. I no longer have the original packaging and I bought it through distribution three months ago - far too long in nearly every case. Perhaps Iomega will buy me out of it. What a disaster, March 19, 2011

I wish I had looked here first. I’m an I.T. provider and I have used the Iomega desktop models on client sites for some time. I did a larger project and sold the ix4-200r 4TB model to my client for use as a backup destination and a location for the archived files. The backups were to be replicated offsite over the internet and the archived files were to be copied to an external USB drive for offsite storage. It seemed to be OK at first, but I encountered a problem copying files over from a Windows server. The shared storage became inaccessible as a result. Looking at the interface showed the same results as Coshe’s review… “Operation cannot be performed because of the status of the device.”. Nice… the storage was inaccessible. I rebooted the unit and also got the same result as Coshe – could no longer log on. Called support, did all of the same things Coshe did, no dice. One level 3 tech told me to try linuxquestions.org for help mounting the storage from a live linux distro. I was able to get to the data with systemrescuecd and the RAID volume was mountable. This begs the question – why does a free linux rescue cd (running from a usb stick – thanks to lilo) see my data but the Iomega interface cannot? Whatever the case, I recovered the data (much of which had not yet been archived elsewhere) and averted the disaster. Iomega acted as though this was an isolated incident and had me reset the device to factory defaults. I restored all of the data and the shares and life seemed back to normal. I then started getting complaints that some of the data was inaccessible (permission denied). I looked at the permissions from the Windows properties and some directories were getting different permissions than others (the user “root” was the only one with permission). Lovely… thankfully I had archived the files to USB a few days earlier then the directories were accessible. I also noticed that our backup software was having trouble reading from the device. Once again I contacted support and eventually arranged to RMA the unit and send the bad one back for in-depth analysis. I set up the new one, restored the data, and all appeared to be well once again. Not so fast… while moving data around on the shares I encountered corruption – files that would not move or delete. Attempting a deletion caused the unit to crash – same as before. Groundhog day! I’ve learned my lesson here. Support is treating me like an idiot and I’ve got a very expensive and very useless device to contend with. I’m going to replace it with something else at my cost (probably the Cisco NSS324) and move on. I’ll try my best to get my money back but that’s unlikely. I no longer have the original packaging and I bought it through distribution three months ago – far too long in nearly every case. Perhaps Iomega will buy me out of it. I might consider deleting this review.

We order and use a lot of these where I work, they are great budget machines. One machine had the power LED light go out, but a quick call to the US-based tech support got an on-site repair scheduled, no need to send it back. The machine still powered on, it was just hard to tell, since they are so quiet. Highly recommend.

It's perfect for her to play games, check email and Facebook. It was cheap, easy to set up, has a lot of pre-loaded features, uses very little space, and can be put virtually anywhere. The drawbacks: Not enough memory (speed) to use with more demands than just game playing so I recommend paying extra for the additional memory. The operating system is the latest Microsoft (7?), which I detest. Instead of Outlook, it's some other email reader; instead of Word, it's some off-brand word processing program. I bought this for my mother, who just tech savvy enough to turn on a computer and not much more. It’s perfect for her to play games, check email and Facebook. It was cheap, easy to set up, has a lot of pre-loaded features, uses very little space, and can be put virtually anywhere. The drawbacks: Not enough memory (speed) to use with more demands than just game playing so I recommend paying extra for the additional memory. The operating system is the latest Microsoft (7?), which I detest. Instead of Outlook, it’s some other email reader; instead of Word, it’s some off-brand word processing program. If you don’t care about that, it’s a dandy home computer and just right for the casual user.

I restored the server itself via its accompanying CD, followed a few of the suggestions in McFedries' book, and things have worked mostly smoothly since then (as smoothly as anything involving Microsoft networking can run). I do have occasional problems; for example, there are times when I'll be able to log into the server via one of my systems using Remote Desktop Connection, yet if I try to log into the server from the same computer using the Windows Home Server Console, I get an error message. But it's unclear what's to blame for that, so I'll just leave it as a caveat. <br/><br/>One last recommendation: when installing the client software on my systems, I ran into problems where it either couldn't find the server on the network, or -- having found it -- failed while trying to download the client software from the server. They also warned not to use the Windows Control Panel to uninstall it, but to download a special uninstall utility from the McAfee security website. I did so and, presto!, all my network problems surrounding the server went away. It has run perfectly ever since then, dutifully backing up all my systems every night without a single network glitch. I work at home and have several computers on an internal network, all of which need backing up on a regular basis. I purchased this server in hopes of it providing a solution. I’d be happier if it had 4 GB of RAM instead of just 2 GB, but since it runs very little software beyond Windows Home Server itself, I’m not sure it really needs much more. Your mileage may vary. ..bruce..

UPDATE: 08/28/2010.

After getting the temperature problem handled, I kept having problems with network stability with the cube — some systems would talk with it, others wouldn’t; reboots would help, but the problems would arise again and were slowly getting worse. Then I got a persistent warning that the McAfee security software had failed to complete an update; I tried to complete it, but couldn’t get it to run to completion. Googling the matter, I quickly found that lots of people had lots of problems with the McAfee software on this server, and that most of these same people said the problem went away when they uninstalled the McAfee software from the server. They also warned not to use the Windows Control Panel to uninstall it, but to download a special uninstall utility from the McAfee security website. I did so and, presto!, all my network problems surrounding the server went away. It has run perfectly ever since then, dutifully backing up all my systems every night without a single network glitch. YMMV. ..bruce..
